What is Bronchitis and RF
Infection of the bronchi-similar to pneumonia but some key differences
Mainly-no focal chest sx, no systemic unwell, self-limiting in 3w
less/no sputum
pathogens are unclear, but 80% occur in autumn/winter
Signs and Sx of bronchitis, and key differences with pneumonia
Inflam of airway with unknown viral pathogen–80% in winter
Usual course- 3w of sx
Cough (productive or not), assox with acute Rhinnorhea, Sore throat, Wheeze
No chest exam signs/rare wheeze
Pneumonia tends to have more SOB, wheeze, sputum, and fever/systemic illnesses (myalgia and other)
IX and mx of acute bronchitis
Usually self limiting within 3 weeks, but 25% of pt have cough for longer
Clinical diagnosis-self aid (hydrate, over the counter meds)
BUT can use CRP to guide Abx use-
20-100– consider delayed prescipt
>100- doxycline first line
