Acute Agitation Flashcards
When is restraint appropriate?
Where use of the Mental Health Act is appropriate (danger to themselves or others)
To fulfil duty of care (to patients, staff, etc)
What agents are typically used to achieve chemical restraint?
Benzodiazepines (diazepam, midazolam, lorazepam, clonazepam)
Neuroleptics (haloperidol, droperidol, olanzapine)
How should benzodiazepines be administered for chemical restraint if possible? Why?
IV; allows titration to response
What is the main risk with use of benzodiazepines for chemical restraint?
Respiratory depression
What risks exist with use of olanzapine to achieve chemical restraint?
Prolonged QT interval
Dystonic reaction including laryngospasm
How do benzodiazepines and neuroleptics interact?
May be synergistic
