N: The lateral cord of the brachial plexus, branches of the supraclavicular nerve
C: Lung (pneumothorax risk)
Lung 5
Chize (cubit marsh)
He-Sea Point-Water Point
L: On the. cubital crease to the radial side of the biceps brachii tendon. This point is best located with the elbow slightly flexed.
I: Cough, hemoptysis, afternoon fever, asthma, fullness in the chest, sore throat, spasmodic pain of the elbow and arm, mastitis
A: Clears lung heat, descends Lung Qi, tonifies Lung Yin, resolves phlegm, relaxes sinews, relieves pain, benefits the bladder, and regulates water passage
M: Puncture perpendicular 0.5-1.0 inch
N: The lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve and radial nerve
C: Cephalic vein
Lung 6
Kongzui (Biggest Hole)
Xi-Cleft Point
L: On the anterior aspect of the forearm, 7 cun proximal to lung 9 on the line joining Lu 9 and Lu 5
I: Cough, asthma, wheezing, bronchitis, hemoptysis, sore throat, pain, and motor impairment of the elbow and arm
A: Regulates Lung Qi, descends Lung Qi, relieves pain, clears heat (acute), and stops bleeding
M: Puncture perpendicular 0.5-1.0 inch
N: Lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve
C: Cephalic vein, radial artery and vein
Lung 7
Lieque (Broken Sequence)
Luo-Connecting point, Command Point for the posterior head and neck, confluent point of the conception vessel, exit point
L: Proximal to the styloid process of the radius, 1.5 cun proximal to LI 5 at the transverse crease of the wrist
I: Headache, neck rigidity, cough, asthma, wheezing, sore throat, nasal obstruction, facial paralysis, lock jaw, constipation, weakness of the wrist, pain in the shoulder and arm, urinary retention, urticaria, edema, migraine, grief, and sadness
A: Disperses and descends Lung Qi, moves wei Qi, releases the exterior (esp.cold), expels wind, opens the conception vessel, opens the nose, and benefits the bladder
M: Puncture oblique 0.3-0.5 inch superiorly
N: Lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve
C: Cephalic vein, the radial artery and vein
Lung 8
Jingqu (Channel Gutter)
Jing-River Point-Metal Point
L: One cun proximal to the traverse crease of the wrist in the depression on the radial side of the radial artery, just proximal to the styloid process of the radius
I: Cough, asthma, wheezing, sore throat, shortness of breath, chest pain, pain in the wrist
A: Descends Lung Qi, opens the chest, releases the exterior, and expels wind
M: Puncture perpendicular 0.1-0.3 inch
N: Lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve
C: Radial artery and vein
Lung 9
Taiyuan (Great Abyss)
Yuan-Source Point, Shu Stream Point, Influential Point of vessels, Earth Point
L: On the transverse crease of the wrist, in the depression on the radial side of the radial artery
I: Cough, asthma, wheezing, hemoptysis, sore throat, fatigue, palpation, poor circulation, chest pain, and pain in the medial aspect of the forearm
A: Resolves phlegm, regulates Lung Qi, relieves coughing, tonifies Lung Qi, tonifies Lung Yin, tonifies Zhong Qi, moves blood, clears Lung and Liver Heat
M: Puncture perpendicular 0.2-0.3 inch
N: Lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve
C: Radial artery and vein
Lung 10
Yuji (Fish Border)
Ying-Spring Point, Fire Point
L: On the radial aspect of the hand at the midpoint of the 1st metacarpal bone. Located at the junction of the red and white skin
I: Cough, hemoptysis, sore throat, fever, loss of voice, abdominal pain, and vomiting
A: Clears Lung heat, benefits the throat, relieves coughing, harmonizes the stomach, and subdues fever
M: Puncture perpendicular 0.5-0.8 ich
N: Branch of Radial Nerve
Lung 11
Shaoshang (Lesser Metal)
Jing-Well Point, Wood Point, Ghost Point
L: On the radial side of the thumb, about 0.1 cun posterior to the corner of the nail bed
I: Cough, asthma, sore throat, epistaxis, tonsillitis, eczema, contraction and pain of the fingers, febrile diseases, loss of consciousness, mental disorders
A: Expels exterior wind, disperses and descends Lung Qi, clears lung heat, benefits the throat, promotes resuscitation, and subdues rebellious Lung Qi
M: Puncture perpendicular or oblique 0.1 inch proximally or prick to cause bleeding
N: Branches of the radial and medial nerves
How does acupuncture work?
-Pain management
-Muscle length
-Neurological inhibition
Inflammatory modulation
-Neurophysiological effects mediated by a variety of areas in the brain: Based on fMRI studies
Acupuncture in neurological conditions:
- Local (a-delta, c-fibers, and group II/III fibers
- Segmental (dorsal horn)
- Extrasegmental and Central regulatory
(Brainstem, limbic, endocrine, autonomic system) - Relating to myofascial trigger points (pain relief through nociceptor inhibition)
Yin areas of the body relative to Yang
-Chest is more Yin vs. Back
-Leg is more Yin vs. Arm
-Lower body is more Yin vs. Upper body
Chinese anatomical position
Arms abducted to 90 degrees w/elbows flexed to 90 degrees (“Put your hands up” position)
Head becomes less Yang relative to hands
Cun measurements:
Are proportional measurements between landmarks
