- Hellenistic Jews from a local synagogue called the freedmen
- they could not stand the Spirit annointed wisdom - Scribes, elders and people are stirred up to confront Stephen
- Stephen was blameless, so false witnesses are hired to make allegations of blasphemy against stephen

- rather than defending himself, he gives a survey of God’s mighty acts
