Activity 12: Steam Distillation Flashcards
It consists of distilling a mixture of water and an immiscible or partly immiscible substance
Steam distillation
Steam distillation can be done by these methods (2)
Indirect method
Direct method
In this method, the water is already mixed with the material to be extracted or purified
Direct method
Practical advantage of steam distillation
purification of substances which have high boiling points
In this method, steam generated by an external source is passed through the material to be extracted or purified
Indirect methid
Properties of essential oil distilled:
Color:
Odor:
Relative density with water:
(a) colorless or pale yellow
(b) calamansi
(c) less dense
How was the essential oil separated from water in the distillate?
By the use of a separatory funnel adhering the principle of density and gravity. Denser liquid sinks to the bottom and expelled by opening the stopcock. The remaining liquid left in the separator funnel which is the essential oil is drained and placed in a separate vial.
What properties must a substance have in order that it maybe practical to distill it with steam?
A substance must be immiscible or partly immiscible and must have high boiling points
When is an external steam source necessary in steam distillation?
External steam source is necessary in steam distillation for large scale production of essential oils
What type of steam distillation technique (direct or indirect) was employed in this experiment?
Direct steam distillation
What is the name of the essential oil from calamansi rind?
Limonene
What distillation method is most effective for the purification or separation of the following:
(a) separation of limonene (oil) from orange peel: ______________________
(b) separation of ethanol from fruit wines: ______________
(c) separation of acetone (b.p. 56.5 deg. C) from water: _____________
(a) Steam distillation
(b) Fractional distillation
(c) Simple Distillation
