active transport Flashcards
how do root hair cells take in minerals and water
1)plants are covered in root hair cells
2) the stick out into the soil
3) hairs give roots large surface area
4) useful for absorbing water and mineral ions from soil
how do root hairs take in minerals using active transport
the concentration of minerals is usually higher in root hair cells than in the soil
so root hair cells can’t use diffusion to take up minerals
they use active transport instead
AT moves minerals against the concentration gradient
BUT AT needs energy from respiration to make it work
why do we need AT to stop us starving
the body needs to absorb nutrients from food to survive
how does AT stop us from dying
nutrients move from gut to the blood
when there’s a HC of nutrients in the gut they diffuse into the blood
when there’s a LC of nutrients in the gut the body uses AT to move the nutrient from a LC to a HC in the blood
