Prefix
Letters or words placed before the root word
Root word
the basis of a word; a word in its own right. Prefixes and suffixes are added to this word
Suffix
letters or words placed after the root word
why are ‘root’, ‘prefix’, and ‘suffix’ words important?
they are used by medical professionals to describe the anatomical structure, position, relation, and action
prone position
lying horizontally and face down
supine position
lying horizontally with face and torso facing up
Rostral (rostrum meaning beak, nose)
toward the nasal region/ or in the case of the brain, toward the tip of the frontal lob
Caudal (meaning tail)
how close something is to the end of the organism. could be used as opposite of rostral and cranial
cranial (meaning skull)
posterior part, where brain is located
cephalic (meaning head)
overall head
Proximal
structures with beginning and end (used for limbs and blood vessels). closer to origin
distal
opposite of proximal, for limbs, farther from origin
dorsal
back view/toward the back
ventral
front view/toward the front
posterior
toward the back
anterior
toward the front
medial
towards the midline
lateral
away from midline
contralateral (means against)
on side opposite to another structure. right arm and leg are controlled by left contralateral side of the forebrain
ipsilateral (same)
on the same side as another structure. Left arm is ipsilateral to left leg
bilateral (twice)
on both sides of the body
unilateral (once)
on one side of the body (unilateral rash)
