Actions of Back Muscles Flashcards
Trapezius
Elevation, retraction, depression of scapula; rotation of glenoid fossa superiorly
Latissimus Dorsi
Extension, adduction, medial/internal rotation of humerus; lifts body toward arm in climbing
Levator Scapulae
Elevates scapula medially, rotates glenoid fossa inferiorly
Rhomboid Major
Retracts and rotates scapula to depress glenoid cavity; attaches scapula to thoracic wall.
Rhomboid Minor
Retracts and rotates scapula to depress glenoid cavity; attaches scapula to thoracic wall
Serratus posterior superior
Elevates ribs during respiration
Serratus posterior inferior
Depresses ribs during respiration
Splenius Capitus
unilateral contraction yields lateral flexion of neck and rotation of head to one side. Bilateral contraction yields head and neck extension.
Splenius Cervicis
unilateral contraction yields lateral flexion of neck and rotation of head to one side. Bilateral contraction yields head and neck extension.
Iliocostalis
Unilateral contraction yields lateral flexion, bilateral contraction yields extension.
Longissimus
Unilateral contraction yields flexion, bilateral contraction yields extension
Spinalis
Unilateral contraction yields flexion, bilateral contraction yields extension.
Semispinalis Capitus
Extension of head
Semispinalis Cervicis
Extension of vertebral column
Multifidus
Unilateral contraction rotates to contralateral side; stabilizes vertebrae
