Action Potentials Flashcards
Polarized
One side of plasma membrane has a different charge than the other (at rest)
Resting potential
Axon is not conducting impulse, -70mv
Sodium potassium pump
Active transport, 3 K+ pumped in and 2 Na+ pumped out
Action potential
Rapid change in polarity
Depolarization
Inside of plasma membrane is more + than the outside
Repolarization
Inside returns to -
Sodium and potassium gates
Voltage activated that change in shape, allowing K+ and Na+ to freely flow
Steps of an action potential
Resting potential, depolarization (+40mv), repolarization, afterpolarization (below -70mv then back to -70mv)
Self propagating
Ion channels are prompted to open when membrane depolarizes
An action potential is considered…
All or nothing
