Act Two: The Crucible Flashcards
“Man, remember, until an hour before the Devil fell, God thought him beautiful in heaven” proclaims Hale on page .
One instant neighbors, friends, and family are pure and innocent in the eyes of the villagers. After accusations start flying that begins to change.
“Oh, it is a black mischief” John Proctor states on page .
He is one of the few that truly comprehends what is going on. It is an insight to the fact that not everyone is persuaded by foolish cries of witchery.
“It’s God’s work we do… I’m I am an official of the court” Mary Warren tells the Proctors on page .
Before any of this started, females had very little power or authority, let alone a teenage girl being an official of the church. The lust for the right to mean something drives the girls and it gives them strength for a period of time.
“You are a coward! Though you be ordained in God’s own tears, you are a coward now!” proclaims John Proctor to Hale.
Proctor fights for his wife against the court as he cries that she is not a witch. His ulterior motive to bring down the court is just a benefit that could come along with it and now he has an excuse. His raw emotions of fear and anger break through as he makes passive aggressive comments within his straightforward insult.
“If you think I am one [a witch], then I say there are none” Elizabeth Proctor tells Hale and the court on page .
Elizabeth stays headstrong although the consequence may be a horrific death. The concept that those pure in heart stay true to their defense is something very rare.
