The idea of witches is a factual thing in the people of Salem’s mind. The concept that the devil can possess everyone including the innocent is something that continues in todays culture.
“I never knew what pretense Salem, I never knew what lying lesson I was taught by all these Christian Women and convented men” stated by Abigail on page .
Abigail begins stirring up suspicion between husband and wife out of pure spite and jealousy. Religion and the foundations of it are the reason all of this is happening.
“Now look you, child, your punishment will come in its time” stated from Parris to Abigail on page .
Very few people see through Abigail’s act and only call her put in the very beginning due to the increasing fear of being accused later on.
“How high did she fly, how high?” Mrs. Putnam questions Parris on page .
The question is not whether or not a little girl flew but rather how high, thus ensuring that the people of the village believe anything spread by word of mouth.
“There is a prodigious danger in the seeking of loose spirits” is stated from Rebecca to Mrs. Putnam on page .
It draws to attention and foreshadows the chaos that can ensue from all the accusations. It is a deeper insight to the fact that those more mature and wise can see through all of the deception.
