Shows he’s a complex character
- caliban may claim he only uses language to curse but here gives a beautiful speech which conveys the wonder and beauty of the island
- dignified speech, we are reminded again of his connection to the island
-speaks in blank verse, others speak in prose, shows there difference between him and the rest, he is a native they are not

-Ariel appears as the harpy and chastises the three men for the usurpation of prospero
-the banquet sudden disappearance shows how the courtiers are powerless
-Ariel’s rebuke forces them to realise everything they have lost is a result of their sinful actions

-he personifies destiny as a higher power with the moral authority to remove unfit people from society
“Denstiny” suggests human like qualities by evoking names
-the characters fates do not depend on abstract forces but rather on people which become evident in usuperton of prosepo
- personification helps emphasise the fact that people not inatangible abstractions control their own fate
-also an assumption that the audience will be familiar biblical terms

“ that are of supplier joints” -Gonzalo

A

-guilt is like a poison in the body begins to wear ones conscious as a toxic substance might degrade ones body
-those young and energetic must stop others from doing bad things
- gonzalo is old so those of “suppler joints” probably refer to the younger characters
- he sounds old and wise here and his observation about guilt proved some insight into the depths of his mind
-poising similar extends over 6 lines which gives a greater power and shows it was more than just passing thought or a bit of word play.
