Act 4 Flashcards
“Be cheerful sire our reveals now are ended these our actors as I foretold you were all spirts”
“
-prospero given permission for Ferdinand and Miranda to marry an orders Ariel to gather sprints for a masque
- many critics choose to read this as a sort of message from shakespear himself
-tempest is widely believed to be the last play he wrote and thus valuing the masque to an end
-prospero marries Shakespeares departure rom. The theatre before his pwn death
-“insubstantial pageant” that fades and leaves nothing behind can be compared to Shakespeare’s work as a playwright
-‘“our little life”- can be interpreted as a gesture of humility remaining the audience that everyone os mortal and n the grander scheme of history insignificant
-point is ironic as Shakespeare’s legacy has proven more enduring than almost any other writer in hairy
“A devil a born devil on who’s nature nurture can never stick”- prospero
-prospero is furious about caliban plan to murder him
-his words reflect a prominent debate amongst colonisers at the time about the nature of indigenous populations
-some argued “savage” populations could be educated or “nurtured” to think and behave like Europeans
-hence the ‘civilising’ missions that imposed Christianity and western cultures on colonised populations
-others believed it was impossible to ‘civilise’ these populations as prospero claims here
-many clamied that non-white people were not human comparing their “nature” to “devils”
-both interpretations are deeply racist and they cast the non-Europeans ad inferior to them
-although the second belief was more likely to be used as justification of enslavement and genocide
“Affections would become tender”
“Mine would sir, were i human”-Ariel
-reveals the irony that Ariel is not human
-throughout the play Ariel has acted with compassion intelligence and dignified self restraint
-his advice that prospero will feel pity is Croce
-shows he has sophisticated understanding of the depth of human emotions
-despite this Ariel refuses to claim human status for himself and obediently acquiesces when prospero continues to delay his promise of Redon
-in this sense we can interpret Ariel ad an i deal colonised subject passively accepting professors right to rule over him solely putting up with bad treatment
“Be cheerful sir” -prospero
“We wish you peace”
“Take my daughter”
-Ferdinand gains his freedom as he faced his loss of power without bitterness
-every character who bears loss this way in the tempest is ultimately rewarded
-
“Bring corollary”
“Appear and pertly
“Most majestic vision”
-prospero now steps into the role of the playwrire
-displayed his full power so amaze and humbnf Ferdinand that he is now in awe of his father in law
“Here’s a garment”- stephano
-just as Antonio wanted to look more like a duke than be a duke
-stephano would rather look like rulers than be rulers
Uses clothes as a metaphor
-taking someone’s clothes is like taking someone’s roles
-comic foils for Antonio
-the clothing isn’t theirs and the clothing holds position of power, power which isn’t rightfully theirs
Like Antonio
