Act 3 Scene 4 Flashcards
SD:
“Enter the Ghost of Banquo and sits in Macbeth’s place”
Manifestation of Macbeth’s guilt.
Banquo’s ghost represents the supernatural. The fact that he sits where Macbeth (the king) should sit reflects the power that the supernatural has obtained (through the Witches, for example).
“never shake thy gory locks at me!”
Macbeth’s loss of sanity.
Gory locks = Blood-covered hair
“Sit, worthy friends. My lord is often thus, and hath been from his youth. Pray you, keep seat.”
Lady Macbeth is lying - steps in and takes control. She has power and is emasculating Macbeth.
“Are you a man?”
Lady Macbeth questions Macbeth’s manhood as he loses his sanity at the sight of Banquo’s Ghost. She is emasculating Macbeth.
