Act 1 Scene 3 Flashcards
“All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!”
The witches declare him as the Thane of Glamis and Cawdor (which he isn’t yet), but also that he will become king.
“If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me without stir”
Macbeth is wondering whether he will have the crown without having to kill anyone for it.
“Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none.”
Banquo is told that his sons will be kings, but that he will not be. This will later worry Macbeth, and he will try to kill Banquo’s sons.
“Do you not hope your children shall be kings, when those that gave the Thane of Cawdor to me promised no less to you?”
Banquo does not fully trust the witches prophecies and is sceptical, whereas Macbeth almost instantly believes them. Here, Banquo is contrasted with Macbeth.
