Act 3 Scene 3 Flashcards
Act 3 Scene 3 Summary
Iago speaks carefully and at length with Othello and plants seeds of suspicion and jealousy which eventually lead to the tragic events of the play.
Handkerchief symbolism
The handkerchief, a gift to Desdemona from Othello, symbolizes so much more than a mere token of affection. To Othello, the handkerchief symbolizes fidelity and his giving it to Desdemona represents a promise that he will be true to her, and a request that she stay true to him. Iago, understanding the object’s significance, plans to turn the token of love into a tool of destruction.
“Whatever you be…
“Beware my lord…
of jealousy! It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock The meat it feeds on.”
“When i love thee…
not, chaos is come again”
” I had rather be…
a toad And live upon this vapour of a dungeon Than keep a corner in a thing I love For others’ uses.”
“I’ll tear…
her all to pieces”
Aesthetic delight
The moment we lay eyes on something beautiful, there’s an immediate reaction, a kind of sensory delight that Addison refers to as ‘ primary pleasures.’ These are feelings evoked directly by the aesthetic qualities of an object or scene – its colors, shapes, or textures.
Credulous
having or showing too great a readiness to believe things:
Myopic
short-sighted
Conciliatory
To win a person over on your side.
Misconstrued
to form a false understanding of the meaning or intention of something that someone does or says
Disorder
A state of confusion
