Act 3 Scene 2 Flashcards
Bennet
That friend of his, mr. Darcy, is a very extraordinary young man! We’ve seen quite a lot of him at the gardiners while I was in london.
Darcy? Darcy at the Gardiners?
Mrs. Bennet
Oh, lizzie thinks she knows more than everybody else.
Oh no mama ! Not everybody-
Bennet
But remember how irresistible you were my dear?
Dont despair mama. While there’s life there’s hope. And after all I still have some of my teeth.
Mrs. Bennet
You shouldn’t joke about that my dear! You know lizzie, you cant expect your papa to find another ten thousand to give to you-or your uncle Gardiner- he, I understand, found the sum for us- though I earnestly hope he doesn’t expect us to pay it back.
I didn’t know my uncle could spare so much money-
Mrs. bennet.
Anyway I’m glad someone in the family was able to find the money for darling Lydia’s dowry.
Otherwise , no doubt, “the naughty mr. Wickham “ would have continued to live in sin with her.
Mrs. Bennet
There is no way of mentioning it not for respectable people.
My poor uncle Gardiner had to spend ten thousand pounds so that respectable people could mention it. I hope he helps not sacrificed the principal of his fortune for this worthless pair.
Bennet
You can dismiss worry from your mind, lizzie.
What do you mean, papa?
Mrs bennet
Oh, my good kind brother! I knew he would manage everything.
But- ten- thousand -pounds!
Mrs. Bennet
Well, it’s none of your business, lizzie. Lydia is married and secured. That’s all that matters
Cannibals and brigands are gentle in comparison
Mrs. Bennet
In Comparison? With what!
Mothers
Bennet
Ah! Did I mention that it was through Mr. Darcy’s efforts we found the pair-
What?!
Bennet
And- that he obtained the money for us - to buy back Lydia’s - respectability
It’s not true.
Jane
He must be a noble character.
But why should Mr. Darcy do all this?
Hilda
Oh, miss lydia - I mean mrs. Wickham.
Its lydia!
Wickham
Have you seen any of our friends in Meryton, miss Elizabeth?
I have not, mr. wickham
