Act 3 Scene 1- Macbeth's Soliloquy Flashcards
What does this show?
“And, to that dauntless temper of his mind
He hath wisdom that doth guide his valour”
“dauntless temper” and “wisdom” shows that Macbeth is struggling to analyse his feelng about Banquo and his sons taking the throne after himself and he’s trying to justify his thought of murdering them which suggests that he is experiencing inner conflict
Analyse,
“Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown,
And put a barren sceptre in my gripe”
Shakespeare uses a metaphor in this quote to how Macbeth’s struggle to decide whether being king was worth murdering King Duncan, this leads to his conflict of whether the murder was worth not having children or an heir to the throne. There is also an angry tone throughout the soliloquy showing his annoyance as he murdered King Duncan for Banquos children
“Mine eternal jewel”
This refers to Macbeth’s soul. It is suggesting that he is going to hell and that he sold his soul to the devil.
What juxtaposition is there in this soliloquy?
There is juxtaposition between his needs and what he did to Duncan. There is also juxtaposition between his bravery whilst challenging the witches and his fear of Banquo.
