Act 2 Scene 2 Flashcards
CLAIREE: The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.
I want to spray just a little more of my French perfume. I love it so much. I love it when the smell just fills the air.
OUSIER: It’s perfect for me. A print this busy’ll never show dog hair.
My feet are like two blocks of ice.
TRUVY: Annelle, remember to get that new thing for the Mr. Coffee.
Have any of you seen her this morning?
CLAIREE: I haven’t. I went directly to the house when I got in. Only the boys were there.
Do you think she’ll come by?
CLAIREE: I have never seen so much food.
You can never have enough at times like these. My husband’s back at the apartment cooking up a storm. He’s convinced that his red beans and rice will make everyone feel better.
TRUVY: Maybe he’s right. That’s why we call it soul food. I’m gonna have to get his recipe.
You’ll have to ask him. Sammy runs me off whenever he starts cooking. That kitchen it so tiny he’s scared he’ll hit me in the stomach with a spatula.
CLAIREE: When are you moving, Annelle?
Next month.
TRUVY: You had to bring it up. I can’t stand it that she’s moving away now that I’m about to be a semi-grandmother.
It’s just down the street TRUVY. A hop, skip, and a jump. That apartment is so scrunched Sammy and I have to step outside to change our minds. You’re toying with me, aren’t you?
M’LYNN: “Mama. I’m going to feel so good when this is over.” They gave her the anesthetic…
In a way she was right. Maybe she knew she was going to be with her king.
M’LYNN: yes, Annelle. Maybe so.
We should be rejoicing!
M’LYNN: you go ahead. I wish I could feel that way. I guess I’m a little selfish. I’d rather have her here.
Miss M’LYNN, I don’t mean to upset you by saying that. You see. When something like this happens, I pray very hard to make heads or tails of it. I think in Shelby’s case, she wanted to care of that baby, of you, of everybody she knew… And her poor body was just worn out. It wouldn’t let her do everything she wanted to do. So she went on to a place where she could be a guardian angel. She will always be young. She will always be beautiful. And I personally feel much safer knowing she’s up there on my side. I know some people might think that sounds real simple and stupid… And maybe I am. But that’s how I get through things like this.
TRUVY: I could squeeze you in first thing Monday. Fine. See you then, Susan.
Thirty nine degrees, you were right TRUVY!
CLAIREE: Don’t let her beauty stand in the way. Hit her!
Miss CLAIREE. Enough!
M’LYNN: That was very funny, CLAIREE.
I have to admit I laughed.. Even though that wasn’t a very Christian thing to do, Miss CLAIREE.
CLAIREE: Annelle, honey. You’re going to have to lighten up.
My husband says the same thing.
