Q

Introduction to new character who is a key in the play: Mrs Johnson

A

She is a white woman living next to the Younger. She is overly dramatic and excited about life.
Her constant use of exclamation marks shows her excitement about everything in life
J; ‘ oh ain’t we getting ready ‘round her, though1’ ‘Yessir!’ ‘Lookather!’ ….’Bless God!’

Her brining up some race issues here:
‘ I bet this time next month y’all’s names will have been in the papers plenty ‘
She used a really strong word here ‘bet’ as a confirmation that the coloured family are the bad seeds in society and that people should and would always portray them as the bad group of people in society this brings out society issues like racism.

Walter talks about what he has done in the past three days of his absence from work, all the context was about he is being depressed about life because he didn’t get the insurance for him to start the business he wanted to. Long paragraphs of him talking about his life, how miserable it is, kind of making excuses as to why he didn’t show up to work for the past three days.

- Mama gives Walter the remaining money but on the note of having some money set aside for Benetha
W: ‘ You trust me like that, Mama?’
M: ‘ I ain’t never stop trusting you. Like I ain’t never stop loving you’
In this conversation the issue of trusting each other was brought up, trust tends to be a valuable and vital thing between family members hence this part is very crucial here. Additionally, this part of the scene shows the affection Mama has for Walter, despite her knowing that not much is going to make out of the liquor store or even if it going against her own principles.
