Act 1 Scene 2 Flashcards
The introduction of new character: Asagai
- An African Boy who values a lot of staying to his roots and being the original ‘form’
- Don’t really like the idea of all these black people getting assimilated to be like the whites
Stupid Walter throwing tantrum like a child again
- When Mama wanted Walter to talk to Ruth as they are expecting a baby, he constantly ignores and neglect the wife
- Throw tantrum by shouting: ‘WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE LISTEN TO ME TODAY!’ He raises his voice to capture everyone’s attention. He thinks that he is not getting much attention. He wants everyone to listen to his opinion, to make him the dominating one in the family
Walter just don’t want to talk to Ruth
context: Ruth wants to talk to Walter about the new baby, she wants to abort the child as she knows they are not financially capable to raise the child and she wants the husband to have a say on it too, however he just shuts her up. From here we can see a clear turning point where Ruth and Walter’s relationship just goes down hill
W: ‘Just out of this house somewhere-‘
R: ‘I’ll come too.’
W: ‘I don’t want you to come!’
R: ‘I got something to talk to you about, Walter. ‘
W: “That’s too bad’
- also, their way of communication seems very ‘dry’
The theme on Dreams: Walter
’ Something eating you up like a crazy man’
- this implies that Mama is not cognisant of the magnitude of Walter’s dream which is start a liqour store, something Mama thinks is not holy to do
‘Something’ refers to Walter’s inability to participate on the male-dominated sphere of material success
Constantly blaming on women for his outcome now
’ No- there ain’t no woman! Why do woman always think there’s a woman somewhere when a man gets restless. “
- The constant repetition of the word ‘women’ is kind of like an accusatory towards women, blaming it all on women. Walter is frustrated by the fact that he is not being understood here
Emphasis on his desire
‘Mama - Mama - I want so many things…’
‘…’
“I want so many things…’
The constant repetition of ‘ i want’ suggests and kind of emphasize to use here how much he feels and desire to get his dream. From here we can sort of pity him in the sense.
