Q

Pavel: How many deaths are you willing to be responsible for?
Eva: Maybe we should stop for a while.

A

No, we can’t! Not now! The Red Cross is coming. This could be our only chance to show the world what’s going on here. We’ve got to put out even bigger issues of Vedem, filled with as much information as possible. So we can get them to the delegation. So we can let them know the truth. So they can take them with them and show them to the world.

Q

Erik: Have you got a plan to get the papers to the Red Cross?

A

I’m working on it.

20
Q

Erik: What about my report on the factories? Are you putting it in the next edition?

A

I want you to rewrite it, and include the other side.

21
Q

Erik: What other side?! They’re using kids… prisoners just a little older than us, as slave labor in the munitions factories. And whose idea was it in the first place?

A

Erik…

22
Q

Erik: Mr. Epstein and the other Jewish elders!

A

Mr. Epstein says he’s saving their lives. That it’s only because those kids are useful to the factories that they’re not being shipped to Poland.

23
Q

Erik: Which one’s worse?

A

I’m not saying he’s right. I’m just saying, include his reasons.

24
Q

Erik: Maybe I’ll also include taht he looks well fed! (he storms off)

A

(Gathering papers) Erik! Erik, wait! Erik! (hurry after him)

25
Q

(Erik finishes reading his article and throws the crumpled up paper at you) Why didn’t you get our newspaper to the Red Cross?! Why didn’t you even try?!

A

Nobody was allowed anywhere near them!

26
Q

Erik: If you’d given the copies to me like I asked I would’ve run straight at them, screaming “Read this!” I would have jumped off that damned carousel, waving the newspaper.

A

And you’d be dead!

27
Q

Erik: We’ve got to fight back!

A

We are! By staying alive, by defying them.

28
Q

Erik: I used to think you had all the answers. If only I could be like Miroslav… but it’s just talk.

A

Stop it Erik.

29
Q

Erik: Make me. (He pushes you) You won’t do anything to me. You won’t do anything to the Germans. You won’t do anything to anyone.

A

I’m warning you.

30
Q

(The others are conversing about the trains.) Erik: Not like this. They say they’re going to ship out the whole camp.

A

(Look up from writing) They who?

31
Q

Erik: Everyone. They say the Allies are getting close, so the Germans want to speed up the exterminating.

A

They’ve been wrong before. They could be wrong again.

32
Q

Jana: Eva, she’s broken!

A

I’ll fix your doll.

33
Q

Gabi: What if it isn’t? What if we’re on the list? (Pavel puts an arm around Gabi and you hand back the doll)

A

We’ve got to hide our work. All of it. The poems, the drawings, the newspaper. We can’t take them to Poland, they could be lost foever there. And we’ve all got to know each other’s hiding places… so whoever’s left, whoever survives can uncover them.

34
Q

Eva: I can’t think that way

A

We have to, otherwise, it will all have been for nothing. Everything we’ve done… Everything we’ve worked for… For nothing.

35
Q

Erik: Pretty good joke (everyone starts looking for hiding spots)

A

Here’s my hiding spot. Under this floorboard.

36
Q

Pavel: And here’s mine

A

Erik?

37
Q

Erik: I don’t care about my stupid writing. I care about fighting back.

A

With what?

38
Q

Erik: With whatever I can. Rocks, sticks… my fists.

A

The transport list must be up. I’m going to see who’s on it.

39
Q

Eva: Can you get any closer?

A

There are too many people.

40
Q

Gabi: (reading off names)…. Ullman, Hans; Weinber, Josef…

A

(turn to face forward) Weiss, Miroslav

41
Q

(gathers things crosses to Erik)

A

Maybe you were right. Maybe we should have been fighting.

42
Q

(cross to hiding spot and take out diary)

A

Dear Diary, this is my final entry. I am off to Poland.

43
Q

(Hide diary again, turn to Alena)

A

Ready?

44
Q

Eva: I love you

A

Maybe we’ll find each other… when it’s over. Look at us. We’re supposed to be kids.

45
Q

(carrying Alena off)

A

My best meal is cherry soup, and warm fresh-baked bread with butter…

46
Q

Alena: And goulash with noodles. And peas.

A

And apple strudel, and…
