Act 1 Scene 4 Flashcards
Doug wrap-up, Cherry with knife
Lewis: “What’s happening is this - I can’t get anyone to play Doug’s role, so we’ll have to do another play.”
“Can’t.”
Lewis: “Why not?”
“Learnt my lines. I’m word perfect. Go on, test me.”
Lewis: “I’m sure you are.”
“You don’t believe me.”
Lewis: “I do.”
“No, you don’t. I can tell.”
Lewis: “Ruth, I’ve got other things on my mind-“
“Any place, any time, I know what I’m doing and everyone else. Test me. The scene where the two men are leaving and we think they’re going to war, Julie and I say, ‘Alas, what do I hear?’ ‘They’re leaving’, she says. Henry says ‘At once’. And I go…one two three…‘Is there any way of stopping them?’
Lewis: “That’s fine, Ruth, I never doubted you.”
“And Henry says - if we can get him to talk - ‘None’. Maybe he can shake his head. Once, twice, how many times do people shake their head for a ‘no’ answer?”
Lewis: “Ruth, that’s wonderful but-“
“Three.”
shake head three times, write down
Roy: “He’s testy because he didn’t get a poke.”
“Then Julie says, ‘Not a single farewell’, and Henry says a few lines, while I walk one, two, three, four five”
Lewis: “Ruth!”
Roy: “Someone give him a poke.”
“And I turn and say ‘Where are they?’”
Lewis: “RUTH, please.”
Roy: “He’s as testy as a ram waiting to be put in the ewe paddock.”
Lewis: “Sorry Ruth. I’m a bit tense. Losing Doug has thrown things a bit haywire.”
“Even though I can do it, you hate me.”
Lewis Ferrando, Nick enters
Lewis ~it’s my first attempt at the part~
Lewis: “Why don’t we take it from the scene where the men have left, pretending to go to war, and Fiordiligi and Dorabella are talking to Despina about how much they’ll miss their lovers. Say from, ‘Ah without my Guglielmo’, Julie.”
Julie: “Ah, without my Guglielmo, I think I’ll die.”
“Without my Fernando
I think I’ll bury myself.”
Cherry: “You might think that no woman ever died for love. Died for a man? Why? There’s a lot more where they come from.”
“Do you believe anyone could
Ever love another man
If she had Guglielmo and Fernano
As a lover?”
Cherry: “Certainly. Think about enjoying yourselves.”
Julie: “Enjoying ourselves?”
Cherry: “Enjoy yourselves. Take lovers. Your gentlemen will be away fighting in a war.”
“Don’t insult those pure men
They are models of fidelity and perfect love.”
Cherry: “Don’t talk nonsense.”
Nick workshops scene
Nick: “And you want to stay true to your lovers. It’s an old-fashioned concept, granted. [To Ruth] But you have to be really pissed off when Despina says there’s more where they came from.”
Roy: “Brilliant! Couldn’t have put it better myself. Are you listening, Jerry?”
Nick: “Okay, let’s do it again.”
“Should I take six or seven steps?”
Nick: “What do you think?”
“Seven.”
