Act 1 Scene 2 Flashcards
Ronald and I enter the drawing room
…very peculiar…
But you think with all the people he invited, he’d show up in time for supper.
I mean this whole thing. None of us have ever met each other. Nobody has ever met Mr. Carlisle in person. Except for the Madame.
Why couldn’t she eat with us?
She said she had to meditate.
Isn’t that fancy word for doin’ nothin’?
I peeked into the ballroom. She was sitting in a chair in the middle staring out into nowhere. So… yes. Apparently it’s how she prepares for the séance.
Did you find Mr. Carlisle… overly persistent that you come here?
Yes.
Am I missing something?
No. (Pause) Have either of you ever been to a séance before?
Good evening gentlemen.
Good evening, Evelyn.
Looks like the Madame is expecting all of us to attend.
If you count Grace, but not if you count Mr. Carlisle.
Now, where have I read about this?
What is it?
Think of nothing.
(Under my breath) Shouldn’t be too hard for him.
(We all listen to creaks and bangs)
That almost sounds like… Morse code. (Take a pen and notepad out of my jacket) I learned Morse code as a scout. (I begin writing) S… C… O… N… F… E
I had a scone for breakfast.
SHHHH!! (I listen) It’s repeating… C-O-N-F… Confess.
What happened?
It just rained pinecones and banana peels.
What did they say?
The one that upset Ronald said that: “You think you can get away with it, but there’s people that know what you’ve done.” It sounded like a man.
(Danny exits. I look around the room)
(To Evelyn) Are you all right?
