Act 1 Scene 1
The play opens with a fight between the Montagues and the Capulets, which results in Prince Escalus threatening death to anyone else who disturbs the peace. Romeo is sad and upset because the girl he loves, Rosaline, doesn’t return his feelings. Romeo’s parents are worried about him and send Benvolio to speak with him.
Act 1 Scene 2
Paris asks Capulet for Juliet’s hand in marriage, but Capulet says she is too young. He does say he will agree though, if Juliet gives her consent. Lord Capulet invites Paris to a feast. However, Romeo and Benvolio also find out about the party and decide to gatecrash so that Romeo can see Rosaline.
Act 1 Scene 3
Lady Capulet and the Nurse talk to Juliet about love. We realise that Juliet has a closer relationship with the Nurse than with her own mother.
Act 1 Scene 4
Benvolio, Mercutio and Romeo head to the Capulet mansion for the party, although Romeo is reluctant. Mercutio shows his cynical nature by showing love as a dream.
Act 1 Scene 5
Romeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight, without knowing they’re from rival families. Tybalt recognises Romeo and wants to fight him but is dissuaded by Lord Capulet. Romeo and Juliet realise that their families are at war.
