ACS Flashcards
what is ACS
Acute Coronary Syndrome is an umbrella term for a spectrum of clinical presentations
what is the common pathology of ACS
ruptured plaque within a coronary artery lewding to thrombosis and flow limitation
what is unstable angina
worsening of angina symptoms, especially during minimal exertion and even at rest.
who can experience unstable angina
- people with previously stable symptoms
- people without any previous issues
what is a STEMI
ST Elevation MI
- charactersied by ECG change
- PTs tend to present with prolonged chest pain at rest
- troponin is raised
What is an N-STEMI
Non ST Elevation MI
- PTs generally had prolonged chest pain at rest
- pain can come upon excertion but not relieved with GTN or rest
- troponin is raised
difference between STEMI and N-STEMI
NSTEMI
- MI has caused damage but NOT caused significant damage to myocardium
STEMI
- MI has caused damage significantly to MI; rhythm of heart conduction has changed, showing on ECG
what can an MI sometimes be mistaken for
indigestion/acid reflux
what is atherosclerosis
a build up of plaque in the arteries
what is tamponade
build up of fluid around the heart within the pericardial sac
what is pericarditis
inflammation of the pericardium
what are cardiac markers
enzymes which are testing in the blood that can indicate tissue damage
what is cardiac monitoring
a device which continuously monitors the conduction of the heart
what does GTN mean?
Glyceryl trinitrate
what does GTN do?
dilates blood vessels to increase blood supply to the heart and thus reducing angina
