Mandatory Reports Under IFR
MARVELOUS VFR C500
M- Missed Approach
A- Airspeed +/- 10 or 5% (of filed, whichever is greater
R- Reaching a holding fix (report time and altitude)
V- VFR on top (when an altitude change will be made)
E- ETA Change +/- 3 min
L- Leaving a holding fix/point
O- Outer Marker (or fix used in lieu of it)*
U- Unforecasted weather
S- Safety of flight (any other info related to safety of flight)
V- Vacating a FL/Altitude
F- Final Approach Fix*
R- Radio/Nav/Approach equipment failure (91.187)
C- Compulsory Reporting Points* (91.183)
500- Unable to climb or descent 500fpm
* - Only required in non-radar environment
Do not fly a procedure turn when
SHARPTT S- Straight in approach clearance H- Holding in lieu of procedure turn A- DME Arc R- Radar vectors to final P- noPT T- Timed approach from a hold fix T- Teardrop course reversal
Building an Apporach
4 A’s A- ATIS A- Altimeter A- Approach(Select approach in accordance with position and wind, tell ATC selected approach) A- Avionics (Set frequencies)
Briefing an Approch
ICEAATM
I- Identify (Approach plate is correct and current)
C- Course (verify course needles are set and in correct mode)
E- Entry (consider and brief how the procedure turn or course reversal will be entered (if applicable) and if circling, how the pattern will be flown)
A- Altitudes (MSA or TAA compared to aircraft altitude, MEA’s along the IAF, IF, FAF, and finally the
DA/DH.)
A- Angles (Correct the final approach course heading including crab angle and descent rate)
T- Time (Note the calculated time FAF to reaching MAP using groundspeed if necessary)
M- Missed (Note the missed approach point instructions and timing)
