Q

Define HARMONICS

A

When cycling of sound waves are regular, harmonics are produced. Whole number multiples of the fundamental frequency (the Harmonic Overtone Series). Also called overtones or partials.

Q

Define INTENSITY

A

Amplitude. Determined by the length of closure of the true vocal folds. Longer closed phase increases sub glottis pressure. TVF stay together for longer increasing the INTENSITY.

Q

Define LOUDNESS

A

Volume. Is the subjective perception of intensity and is affected by many factors. For example, the distance between the source and detector or the frequency.

Q

Define NOISE

A

Lacks mathematical relationship between the fundamental frequency and the overtones. The source vibrates irregularly and has no period.

Q

What are FORMANTS?

A

A group of harmonics that are more intense than others. Peaks of acoustic energy in some areas of the spectrum. Fundamental is labelled F0.
