Acoustics Flashcards
Define PITCH
The perception of vibratory patterns.
Define FREQUENCY
The number of vibrations per second in a sound wave.
Define FUNDAMENTAL FREQUENCY
The lowest frequency of a periodic waveform. The cycles per second of the sound waves.
Define HARMONICS
When cycling of sound waves are regular, harmonics are produced. Whole number multiples of the fundamental frequency (the Harmonic Overtone Series). Also called overtones or partials.
Define Hz
Vibrations per second
Define kHz
1 kilo = 1000
1 kHz = 1000 kHz
Define INTENSITY
Amplitude. Determined by the length of closure of the true vocal folds. Longer closed phase increases sub glottis pressure. TVF stay together for longer increasing the INTENSITY.
Define LOUDNESS
Volume. Is the subjective perception of intensity and is affected by many factors. For example, the distance between the source and detector or the frequency.
Define dB
Decibel. Measured by a logarithmic scale.
What does the SIGNAL represent on Voiceprint?
The waveform.
What does SPL stand for?
Sound Pressure Level
What is a SOUNDWAVE?
A wave of compression and rare faction (reduction of an items density) by which sound is produced in an elastic medium such as air.
Define TONE
A steady periodic sound. Musical tone is characterised by duration, pitch, intensity and timbre.
Define NOISE
Lacks mathematical relationship between the fundamental frequency and the overtones. The source vibrates irregularly and has no period.
Define INTERHARMONIC NOISE
Any frequency which is a non inter multiple of the fundamental frequency.
