List 4 principles of management of acne vulgaris
- Remove any exacerbating factors
- Correct the abnormal keratinization (topical retinoids, oral isotretinoin, hormones)
- ↓bacterial population (antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide, oral isotretinoin [indirectly])
- ↓sebaceous gland activity (hormones, oral isotretinoin)
- ↓inflammation (topical retinoid, oral isotretinoin, antibiotics [some])
- ↓scarring
- Avoid monotherapy with topical or oral antibiotics
- ↓antibiotic resistance
List 4 recommendations for skin care
- Do not wash more than 2 X daily
- Use gentle cleanser
- Avoid scrubs, astrigents, or other irritating products
- Oil free/non-comedogenic makeup only
- Moisturizer placed over irritating topical medications to minimize irritation
