ACIM Flashcards

1
Q

What is the attitude of non-dualism guiding you to recognize?

A

The attitude of non-dualism tells me that what I am seeing is not the truth.

Q

If the Truth is that everything perceived isn’t true, what logical deduction should be made about my internal reactions to this world?

A

I should be asking myself “what’s the point or value in expending energy in judging something that isn’t there?”.

Q

If this world is an illusion then why does it matter to me what is happening in this illusion - in this “world” in which I believe I am a body?

A

The simple Truth is that this illusion IS having an impact on me NOT because it’s real, but because I have GIVEN it a power it does not and cannot have.

Q

Do the actions I take or don’t take matter in this world?

A

It doesn’t matter what actions you take or don’t take in the world—what DOES matter is my way of SEEING and the ATTITUDE I maintain while engaging in any action.

Q

What about my earthly needs and concerns? How ill I know what to do and how to live?

A

Of course, as long as you appear to exist within the world of multiplicity, you will have some temporary earthly concerns, and we do not intend to ignore your worldly needs. The Holy Spirit isn’t stupid. The way to go through life now, is to always join with the Holy Spirit and / or Jesus, while doing what you call “your” life.

Q

So I am to consider the Holy Spirit as my True guide. As my boss even though I appear to be my own boss? And I can be practical and use my intelligence to make my life as successful and efficient as possible?

A

Yes! We’re not suggesting you shouldn’t be practical and take care of yourself. It’s just that your real boss won’t be of this world. You don’t even have to tell anybody you’re not the boss if you don’t want to. If you want to have your own business and look like you’re the boss, then fine. Make it work the best way you feel guided to. BE GOOD TO YOURSELF.

Q

Which is more important - the work I do or the mental attitude I have while doing my job?

A

It’s your mental attitude we’re really concerned with, not what you appear to do. Eventually, you will come to see anything you do to make a living as an illusion to support you in the illusion, without really supporting the illusion.

Q

What important ability am I acquiring with the attitude of pure non-dualism I.e. That the world - the sum total of my experience isn’t true?

A

With the attitude of non-dualism, you are acquiring the ability to question all of your judgments and beliefs. Because all my judgements and beliefs are based on the dualistic attitude that I am a body in a world outside my body.

Q

There are two kinds of oneness what are they and which one is the ultimate experience or reality?

A

The oneness Buddha experienced was with the mind. It’s an imitation of the genuine oneness Jesus experienced and guides us to experience through ACIM. Few have learned to make the distinction between being one with the mind that has seemingly separated itself from God, and being one with God. The seemingly separated mind MUST ultimately be returned to Him.

Q

How is Newtonian and Quantum physics different in explaining the objective universe?

A

Newtonian physics held that objects were real and outside of you with a separate existence. Quantum physics demonstrates that this is not true. The universe is not what you assume it to be; everything that appears to exist is really INSEPARABLE THOUGHT. You can’t even observe something without causing a change in it on the sub-atomic level.

Q

What is the correct perspective on learning this truth? On traveling this road through the four phases of coming to Truth?

A

Each of the four major attitudes of learning are long roads in themselves, and you will sometimes bounce around like a Ping-Pong ball in between them. The Holy Spirit will correct you along the way and set you back in the right direction. Do not feel bad when you temporarily lose your way. There is no one who has ever walked this earth, including J, who did not give in to temptation in some way. The myth of living a perfect life in terms of behavior is self-defeating and unnecessary. All that is necessary is to be willing to receive correction.

Q

It’s true that matter appears out of nowhere. What’s less obvious, and yet necessary to realize, is that after it appears it is still nowhere. All space is empty and non-existent, even the tiny fraction of it that appears to contain something. We’ll explain what that something is eventually. As far as thoughts making images appear, a more accurate way of putting it would be that one thought made all images appear, because they all represent the same thing in seemingly different forms.

Q

What is meant by the “like from like” principle?

A

This principle states that anything coming from God must be like Him. Pure non-dualism is not willing to compromise on this principle either. Rather, it says that anything that comes from God must be exactly like Him. God could not create anything that is not perfect or else He wouldn’t be perfect. The logic of that is flawless. If God is perfect and eternal, then by definition anything He creates would also have to be perfect and eternal.

A

As far as J was concerned, there was no J, and eventually there wasn’t. His reality was now that of pure spirit and outside of the illusion completely. This reality is also completely outside of the mind that made the false universe, a mind that people mistake for the home of their true oneness. J knew that the miscreation of the universe didn’t have anything to do with the truth. His identity was with God and nothing else.

48
Q

What lesson is embedded in the daily “ritual” of joining with and asking for guidance from the Holy Spirit as you go about your daily activities?

That you are NEVER alone.

A
  1. Why was it made up?
  2. Who made it up?
  3. If I made it up, what Value did I see in doing this?
50
Q

What happens when I judge something?

A

To judge it is to give it reality. But how can you judge and give reality to that which isn’t there?

51
Q

What were the three things Jesus said to Thomas when he called him aside and told him not to repeat it?

A

[1] You dream of a desert, where mirages are your rulers and tormentors, yet these images come from you.

[2] Father did not make the desert, and your home is still with Him.

[3] To return, forgive your brother, for only then do you forgive yourself.

52
Q

What did Jesus mean in the Gospel of Thomas when he answered the following question:

The disciples said to him, “When will the Kingdom come?”

He said, “It will not come by watching for it. It will not be said, ‘Behold here,’ or ‘Behold there.’ Rather, the Kingdom of the Father is spread out upon the earth, and people do not see it.”

A

Jesus was teaching that the Kingdom of Heaven is something that is present, if not presently in your awareness.

53
Q

When Jesus said , “It (the kingdom) will not come by watching for it. It will not be said, ‘Behold here,’ or ‘Behold there.’ Rather, the Kingdom of the Father is spread out upon the earth, and people do not see it.”, did he mean the Kingdom is on Earth?

A

No! Jesus is not saying here that the Kingdom of the Father is in the earth. Indeed, he knew that the earth was IN OUR MINDS. He was speaking about something that people do not see because the Kingdom of Heaven cannot be seen with the body’s eyes, which are only capable of beholding limited symbols. Heaven does not exist within the realm of perception, but is the genuine form of life that you will eventually become completely AWARE of.

54
Q

What is Jesus expressing when he said the following saying from the book of Thomas?

“Whoever drinks from my mouth shall become like me. I myself shall become that person, and the hidden things will be revealed to that person.”

A

He is expressing His intense desire to be one with me, a desire so strong, that I cannot fully understand.

55
Q

According to Arten and Pursah Jesus joins with me. Is this a metaphor or is it a real thing that happens?

A

The mystical joining that Jesus is talking about is something that happens quite LITERALLY. And it is accomplished through the lessons of true forgiveness.

56
Q
The lessons of true forgiveness that allow the Union of Jesus and me to take place are for those who are ready to receive their individual instruction.
What saying (by Jesus) in the book of Thomas expresses this sentiment.

.

A

I shall choose you, one from a thousand and two from ten thousand, and they shall stand as a single one.

57
Q

What is one of the corner stones of Jesus’ message and which Thomas sayings express this key belief?

A

Today, you and your friends believe in the existence of a trilogy—body, mind, and spirit. The “balance” of all three is important in your philosophy. A cornerstone of Jesus message that He taught was that the seemingly separated ,WHICH MAKES AND USES BODIES, must CHOOSE between the CHANGELESS and ETERNAL reality of SPIRIT—which is God and His Kingdom—or the unreal and ever-changing universe of bodies—which includes ANYTHING that can be perceived, whether you appear to be in a body or not.

58
Q

Was the crucifixion something Jesus chose to do as part of a lesson He wanted to teach? And if so what was the lesson?

A

the whole thing was a lesson he had chosen to teach. The lesson was:

“Bodies, including Jesus’s are NOT real”

59
Q

What are the two words that express the absolute and total Truth that Jesus was teaching?
List some of the characteristics of the meaning of these words?

A

“GOD IS”
Characteristics:

  1. They speak the absolute and total truth.
  2. They are the correction of the universe.
  3. To appropriate them, they represent a choice.
  4. In order for you to COMPETENTLY make that choice, you will have to become much more awareyou will have to become much more aware of what you are really choosing between.
60
Q

Does my mind need training to be able to choose with Holy Spirit and attain my Salvation?

A

Yes! My mind needs training to think along certain lines. To be able to choose as Jesus chose.

61
Q

How does Arten and Pursah feel about alcohol induced irrational behavior?

A

How many tragedies in your world are the result of someone doing something while under the influence of alcohol that they would never ordinarily do?

62
Q

Is there a document in earth that expresses exactly what Jesus would want to say if He was here now?

A

Yes. There is a spiritual document that comes as close as anything possibly can to expressing what J actually wants to say.

63
Q

How did Jesus bring about the writing of a course in miracles? List some of the characteristics of ACIM.

A

He spoke it, word for word, to the person who took seven years of her life to write it down. There are no opinions in it from anyone but J. It was not edited to suit any religion, nor changed in order to appeal to a generic audience. Its final editing was directed by J through this woman. Unlike Thomas, it is a complete presentation as well as a comprehensive training. It is not meant to be the handbook of a religion or a code of moral behavior. It is a system of thought proposing that if you take care of the mind, all else will follow naturally.

64
Q

What exactly is ACIM?

A

It is a self-study, one-on-one metamorphosis into Christ that is done at the level of the mind between you and J, or you and the Holy Spirit, if you prefer to think of it that way. Either one will do.

65
Q

What are major goals of ACIM and how is it accomplished?

A

Inner peace and true strength are major goals of A Course in Miracles, but it has a unique way of accomplishing this within you. The world will change as a result of it, but that is not what the Course is for. It is for you. It’s a present. But it is also a challenge. You will sometimes hear people say that the Course is simple, but you will seldom hear anyone say it is easy.

66
Q

Can you explain what is meant by plato’s story of the dream and how Jesus interprets it?

A

For Plato, the free one was his mentor Socrates—who was executed by being forced to drink poison. But you could fill in the names of numerous fine teachers who have challenged others to rise above the world. Many have had their bodies killed in the process, yet it doesn’t really matter. For as Plato was trying to tell the world with that story, your reality is not at all what you think it is. As great as Plato was, he didn’t really know where the shadows were coming from. You will. Plato thought the light was coming from the Good, which was true symbolically. But he also thought that these shadows people see with the body’s eyes all of their lives were being cast by perfect ideas of each thing. That wasn’t true. J knew what was really causing the shadows—and exactly what to do about it. We will be sharing that with you. It would be helpful for you to understand that J’s reality is not the same as the world’s reality. He is not here in the illusion. Just like when you wake up in your bed from a dream, you are no longer in the dream. At times you may have experienced the dream as being real, but it wasn’t. You may long to bring J into your dream with you, but he has a better idea. He wants you to wake up so you can be with him. He wants you to be free—outside the dream completely. Outside Plato’s cave. Outside all limits and beyond all boundaries.

67
Q

Does Jesus want to be in this world with you? Does He want me to bring Him into this dream of mine(

A

No! Jesus wants me to wake up. To be with Him - completely outside the dream.

68
Q

As a student of ACIM what is my real job or vocation on this planet?

A

Your real job from now on is to 1. learn, 2. practice and eventually 3. apply very skillfully the same art of advanced forgiveness that Jesus did.

69
Q

At this time, like the rest of the world, you believe that wisdom is having good judgment.

A

At this time, like the rest of the world, you believe that wisdom is having good judgment.

70
Q

What is the guidance ACIM provides concerning how I should interpret this world of my perception?

A

ACIM says that everything I behold or am witness too in the universe of perception has one of two purposes for you to choose from. One purpose will keep you a prisoner; the other will free you

71
Q

What scripture in ACIM reveals what will happen if I choose the Holy Spirits interpretation of what is going on in perception?

A

All that is given you is for release; the sight, the vision and the inner Guide all lead you out of hell with those you love beside you, and the universe with them.10

72
Q

ACIM is speaking on two different levels. What are they?

A

One level being purely metaphysical instruction and the other being a more practical, everyday level of forgiveness practice

73
Q

Why is ACIM so advanced?

A

the Course is as advanced as it is because Jesus took seven years of a woman’s time, with her going through whatever it took, so he could tell you exactly what he wants to tell you.

74
Q

How can you summarize the central message of ACIM?

A

The Course is about the healing of your unconscious guilt by the Holy Spirit and your return to Heaven through the dynamic of forgiveness, which harnesses the tremendous power of your mind’s ability to choose.

75
Q

What single sentence did Jesus use to describe ACIM?

A

This is a course in mind training.4

76
Q

Is the power of he universe and the power of God the same thing?

A

No!

77
Q

How did Arten and Pursah answer the question:

How long does it take to become a master?

A

The answer is:

  1. it happens when it happens.
  2. the time comes before that when you’re so happy that the question doesn’t really matter anymore!
  3. Since the Holy Spirit is your Inner Teacher, you should always expect to be a student as long as you appear to be in a body.
  4. This is a lifelong spiritual path for people who are serious about wanting to break free from the world and go home.
78
Q

What does ACIM offer?

A

The opportunity to learn from Jesus Himself

79
Q

Is the Jesus of the bible and the Jesus of ACIM the same? Also are these two documents saying the same thing?

A

The Jesus of the Course is not the same as the version of Jesus in Christianity, and the two thought systems are not compatible.

80
Q

Why is the peace of God a goal of ACIM?

A

The peace of God is the goal of the Course because it must be attained in order to regain the awareness of your reality in the Kingdom.27

81
Q

Is physical resurrection and physical immortality a component of the Truth?

A

The ideas of physical resurrection and physical immortality are not only fantasies, but totally unnecessary.

82
Q

What do reality, live and abstraction have to do with the natural state of the mind?

A

Reality and love are natural and abstract; bodies and fear are unnatural and specific.

As the Course teaches, Complete abstraction is the natural condition of the mind.28

83
Q

Briefly explain an aspect of Christianity which shows that the course and Christianity don’t fit together.

A

The Course is saying that the body is illusory and is based on a thought system that is actually the antithesis of God, if there could be an antithesis of God. Christianity has served to perpetuate the thought system that results in a state of seemingly separate bodily existence by elevating Jesus’s body to one of extreme specialness—thus fulfilling the needs of people to validate their own experience of uniqueness and individuality.

84
Q

Name one way in which the Holy Spirit will slowly awaken you?

A

One way the Holy Spirit will awaken you is to teach you that what you think is happening is not happening.

85
Q

What is psychological invulnerability and can this be attained while still in the body?

A

Psychological invulnerability is that nothing can hurt you emotionally. The course says it like this:

The guiltless mind cannot suffer.

86
Q

Explain how ACIM defines wisdom.

A

We told you the last time that when we came back we’d let you know what wisdom really is.
As far as wisdom is concerned, the world believes that wisdom is having good judgment and being right. That’s not true. All being right will do is keep you stuck here forever. I’m going to recite what J says in the Course about wisdom and its relationship to innocence. By the way, this is also what it really means to be pure of heart.

Innocence is not a partial attribute. It is not real until it is total. The partly innocent are apt to be quite foolish at times. It is not until their innocence becomes a viewpoint with universal application that it becomes wisdom. Innocent or true perception means that you never misperceive and always see truly.31

87
Q

How can someone like Hitler be seen as innocent?

A

Hitler and everyone else in the world, including you, are equally innocent because what you are seeing is not true.32 This is your dream. As the Course teaches, the dream is not being dreamed by somebody else.33

88
Q

What name does ACIM give the thought system of fear and separation from God?

A

Incidentally, the thought system of fear and separation from God is given the name ego in the Course,35 and this term shouldn’t be confused with the term ego as it is used in traditional psychology. J always spoke to us in large, all-encompassing terms, and the Course use of the word ego is no exception. You should remember that no matter how large it may appear to be, the ego is just a thought—and thoughts can be changed.

89
Q

What God creates in His extension of Himself is called _________?

A

CHRIST

90
Q

What are the characteristics of Christ?

A
  1. Christ is not in any way separate or different than God.
  2. It is exactly the same.
  3. Christ is not a part of God, It is an extension of the whole.
  4. Real Love must be shared, and the perfect Love that is shared in God’s Universe is beyond all human comprehension.
91
Q

Am I love or am I a person?

A

You are love

92
Q

Joseph, Jesus’ dad - was he employed as a stonemason or was he a self employed carpenter?

A

He was a stonemason.

93
Q

What is the role of the bible or ACIM? Do I take it with me to heaven?

A

Nobody will be bringing their Bibles or Course books into Heaven with them. The Course is a tool; you use it like a ladder to climb up to where you’re going. Once you get there, you throw the ladder away. It’s no longer needed.

94
Q

At the start all is united . There is No division - all is one.
First division in the mind produces consciousness and now you have a choice. Now you have a conscious choice to make.
Before that, there was nothing to choose between. But now there are two possible responses to this idea of separation.

A

Before that, there was nothing to choose between. But now there are two possible responses to this idea of separation.

95
Q

In the Disappearance of the Universe, the ascended Masters refer to “you” as being what part of the mind?

A

Now, the you that we and the Course are referring to has nothing to do with you as a human being—it’s the part of your mind that makes decisions.

96
Q

Is ACIM referring to a person or to an aspect of mind when it speaks about “you”.

A

It does not refer to a person instead it is referring to the part of your mind that makes decisions.

97
Q

What is the first separation in the creation of the world?

A

Something appears to happen which, as in a dream, doesn’t really happen—it just appears to. For just an instant, for just one, inconsequential fraction of a nanosecond, a very small aspect of Christ appears to have an idea that is not shared by God. It’s kind of a “What if?” idea. It’s like an innocent wondering in the form of a question—which unfortunately is followed by an apparent answer. The question, if it could be put into words was, “What would it be like if I were to go off and play on my own?” Like a naïve child playing with matches who burns down the house, you would have been much happier not to find out the answer to that question—for your state of innocence is about to be seemingly replaced by a state of fear and the erroneous, vicious defenses that this condition appears to require.

98
Q

what is the state of heaven?

A

Unlike the concrete, specific world you appear to be in now, this constant and enthralling state of awareness is:
1. completely abstract,
2. eternal,
3. unchanging and
4. united.
5. there is no concept of space; there is only everywhere.
The result of all this is the endless sharing of perfect Love, which is beyond understanding.

99
Q

What does God “do” with the idea:

“What would it be like if I were to go off and play on my own?”

A

Because your idea is not of God, He does not respond to it. To respond to it would be to give it reality. If God Himself were to acknowledge anything except the idea of perfect oneness, then there would no longer be perfect oneness. There would no longer be a perfect state of Heaven for you to return to. As we will see, you never really left anyway. You’re still there, but you have entered into a nightmare state of illusion.

100
Q

What does Jesus call this idea of separation in ACIM?

A

“tiny, mad idea…”7

101
Q

Since the tiny mad idea something has changed in the Mind of Christ. How and what has changed?

A

In this cosmic instant of seeming individuality—and no matter how attractive you may think individuality is, it is nothing but separation—there seems to be a tiny aspect of Christ that is now aware of something else. That is duality. Now, instead of oneness, you have twoness. Before, there was the perfect oneness of Heaven and nothing else. That is non-duality, or non-twoness. That is still reality. There is not really more than one thing, but now something different seems to be going on for you. There seems to be God and something else. That is the illusion of duality, and the world of multiplicity and the endless subjects and objects you perceive in it are merely symbolic of separation. While you may still try to create, you cannot really create without the power of God, so everything you make eventually falls apart.

102
Q

What happens when a baby is born?

A

The mind that is reliving the seeming separation has actually fallen asleep and is dreaming an idle, insignificant dream, or nightmare, because anything that seemed to be apart from Heaven would have to be symbolic of an opposite to Heaven. It would thus seem to include opposite characteristics.

103
Q

So the tiny mad idea or the “what if” scenario mentioned as the first step in the creation of the world produces a seemingly separated mind. What step/s follows this?

A

The devolvement from a seemingly separate mind into a 1. universe of bodies, and

  1. why it feels so real to you and
  2. Why it appears to be so real
104
Q

According to ACIM CHRIST is define as?

A

He is the Self we share, uniting us with one another, and with God as well.

105
Q

So this small aspect of Christ has briefly dozed off and is dreaming a dream of separation and individuality. At this point in our story you have the very beginning of consciousness. In order to have consciousness you have to have separation. You’ve got to have more than one thing. You have to have something else to be conscious of. This is the beginning of the split mind.

A

Consciousness, the level of perception, was the first split introduced into the mind after the separation, making the mind a perceiver rather than a creator. Consciousness is correctly identified as the domain of the ego.12

106
Q

How does ACIM define what is my Spirit?

A

Spirit is defined as your UNALTERABLE TRUE REALITY.

107
Q

What is consciousness?

A

Consciousness, the level of perception, was the first split introduced into the mind after the separation, making the mind a perceiver rather than a creator. Consciousness is correctly identified as the domain of the ego.

108
Q

What was the impact of the separation introducing degrees, aspects and intervals?

A

PERCEPTION came into existence

109
Q

What is the relationship between consciousness and the split mind

A

In order to have consciousness you have to have separation. You’ve got to have more than one thing. You have to have something else to be conscious of. This is the beginning of the split mind.

110
Q

Why does ACIM say that perception always involves the misuse of mind?

A

because it brings the mind into areas of uncertainty.14

111
Q

According to ACIM, consciousness started when what happened?

A

Consciousness started when a small aspect of Christ has briefly dozed off and is dreaming a dream of separation and individuality.

112
Q

Because of the power of the mind, you need to appreciate the power of?

A

My belief

113
Q

What gave the idea that I could be separate from God so much seeming power and realism?

A

It was your belief in the idea you could be separate from God—your taking it seriously—that gave it so much seeming power and realism.

114
Q

According to ACIM what do I need to do to be free of the world?

A

As the Course says: Freedom from illusions lies only in not believing them.25

115
Q

WHAT PART OF YOUR MAKE DOES THE COURSE IN MIRACLES SAY YOU BELIEVE IS YOUR SOUL?

A

Your separate mind

116
Q

Who made the body?

A

The ego

117
Q

What is the egos purpose behind the creation of a body?

A

It allows the ego to permit into your awareness, almost exclusively, only those things which testify to the reality of its cherished illusion.
