acids, bases and salts Flashcards
what is an acid
a substance that releases H+ ions in a solution
what is the symbol equation for nitric acid
HNO3
what is the symbol equation for sulfuric acid
H2SO4
what is the symbol equation of hydrochloric acid
HCl
what is the symbol equation for phosphoric acid
H3PO4
what is an alkali
- releases OH- ions when dissolved in water
- soluble base
what does SPA stand for
sodium, potassium, ammonium
what is a base
H+ ion acceptor
what is a salt
formed when an acid reacts with a metal, base or carbonate
what does MASH stand for
metal + acid - salt + hydrogen
what does BAWS stand for
base + acid - water + salt
what does CAWCS stand for
carbonate + acid - water + carbon dioxide + salt

what is the method for precipitation
- mix two soluble salts together
- filter
- wash with distilled water
- pat dry with filter paper
what is the titration method
- add acid to burette and note initial volume
- add 25cm3 alkali to conical flask using pipette
- add indicator to conical flask
- add acid and swirl until colour change and note down final volume
- repeat without indicator
- heat until saturated
- leave to cool and crystalise
- filter crystals
- pat dry
what is the method for insoluble bases and acid
- warm acid
- add excess base
- filter
- heat until saturated
- leave to cool and crystalise
- filter crystals
- pat dry
