acids, bases and ph indicators Flashcards
Acids characteristics
often solutions but sometimes crystals, react easily with bases and metals. they are non-metals. They are corrosive, sour tasting and conduct electricity.
What happens when acid crystals dissolve in water
produce an acid solution, know as aqueous. These acids release hydrogen atoms.
Base characteristics
react similarly to acids if concentrated enough. metals. They are caustic (very concentrated), bitter, conduct electricity and feel slippery—usually crystals.
What happens when bases are dissolved into water
They produce an alkaline solution and release hydroxide ions.
Ph of acids, bases and neutrals
acids 0-6, bases 8-14, neutrals 7
universal ph colours for acids and bases
acids = red - yellowgreen, bases=bluegreen - dark purple, neutral = green
indicators
change colour at only a certain ph. e.g thymol blue only shows strong acids and bases.
how to write a base
write the metal/element name and add oxide or hydroxide on the end with a space inbetween.
