Acids, Bases and Alkalis Flashcards
What is an acid?
A substance with a pH less than 7 and form H+ ions in water
What is a base?
A substance that neutralises an acid, forming a salt and water only
What is an alkali?
A base that is soluble in water
How can you measure the pH of a solution?
- Universal indicator
- Phenolphthalein
- Methyl orange
- Litmus paper
- pH probe
What is the colour for phenolphthalein?
Colourless (acidic and neutral)
Pink (alkaline)
What is the colour for methyl orange?
Red (acidic)
Yellow (neutral and alkaline)
What is the colour for litmus paper?
Red (acidic)
Purple (neutral)
Blue (alkaline)
What is a strong acid?
An acid that almost completely ionises in water
What is a weak acid?
An acid that does not full ionise in water
What does an acid and metal form?
Salt + hydrogen
What does an acid and metal oxide form?
Salt + water
What does an acid and metal hydroxide form?
Salt + water
What does an acid and metal carbonate form?
Salt + water + carbon dioxide
How can you test for carbon dioxide?
Bubble the solution into limewater (turns cloudy if CO2 present)
How do you make an insoluble salt?
- Take two soluble salts and dissolve both reactants in deionised water
- Mix the two solutions together. A precipitate should form
- Filter out the mixture to leave the precipitate
- Rinse precipitate with deionised water
- Dry in an oven
