Acids and their Salts Flashcards
What is used in a neutralistation reaction?
A base, it is a compound that can neutralise an acid
What is the word equation for when an acid reacts with a base?
Acid + base –> salt + water
What is a base?
It is a metal compound. Either hydroxide, oxides or carbonate
Where is hydrochloric acid produced and what is it used for?
In the stomach. It kills bacteria and activates enzymes used for digestion
What does too much stomach acid cause and how can it be helped?
It can cause indigestion and can be relieved by antacids
Define TITRATION
It is when you slowly add and alkali to and acid until exactly the right has been added to neutralise it
What remains after an acid is neutralised?
Salt and water
How is a salt named?
First name - metal in the base
Second name - acid
Define ELECTROLYSIS
It is when a compound is split up using electrical energy. An electric current is made to pass through the a solution of the compound
How are the gases produces at the electrodes different to the liquid?
The gases are less dense than the liquid and so bubble up
There is an equal volume of gas at each electrode when hydrochloric acid is used in electrolysis. What do this tell us?
This tells us that there i equal amounts of chlorine and hydrogen in hydrochloric acid
What is the chemical test for hydrogen?
A lit splint makes a popping sound when plunged into tube of hydrogen
What is the chemical test for oxygen?
A glowing splint relights in oxygen
What is the chemical test for chlorine?
A lit splint goes out in a tube of chlorine and damp indicator paper is bleached white
What are the properties of chlorine?
Chlorine is pale green and has a distinctive smell
