Acid Rain and Climate Change Flashcards
1
Q
How is acid rain formed?
A
When sulfur dioxide reacts with oxygen and water vapour, it becomes sulfuric acid
2
Q
What does acid rain damage?
A
Building, tress, life in streams and ponds, washes valuable materials away from the soil and releases toxic metals
3
Q
How can acid rain be prevented?
A
- removing sulfur from fuels before they are burned
- trapping sulfur dioxide released after burning fuels
- swapping to fuels with lower sulfur content
4
Q
What are some important examples of greenhouse gases?
A
carbon dioxide, water vapour and methane
5
Q
How have humans increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?
A
By burning hydrocarbons and by cutting down and burning forests
6
Q
Describe the GREENHOUSE EFFECT
A
The warm earth radiates IR out towards spaces. Greenhouse gases absorb this and trap the energy on the planet, increasing the global temperature
