Acids and bases: Strength and conc, pH scale, types of oxides Flashcards

1
Q

Strong acids

A
  • completely ionized in aqueous sol e.g. HCl

- fully ionizes regardless of conc

Q

Strength of acid

A
  • don’t confuse it with conc of acid
  • “strong” and “weak” refer to extent of ionization of acid
  • “concentrated” and “dilute” tell us how much of an acid is dissolved in the sol
  • strength not affected by conc

Q

Acidic oxide

A
  • mostly non-metals
  • dissolve in water to form acids
  • don’t react with acids, react with alkalis to form salt and water

Q

Basic oxide

A
  • -mostly metals
  • insoluble in water (sodium and potassium are soluble and dissolve readily in water to from alkali)
  • solids at room temp
  • react with acids to form salt and water
