Acids and Bases SL Flashcards
Distinguish between strong and weak acids properties
Strong acids have higher conductivity, weak acids have lower conductivity
Strong acids react faster, weak acids react slower
Strong acids are relatively dangerous, weak acids are relatively safe
How is a conjugate acid made?
By adding a proton
Outline Lewis theory
Lewis acids are electron pair acceptors, lewis bases are electron pair donors
Difference between bases and alkalis?
Bases are soluble alkalis
Difference between weak and strong acids
Strong acids dissociate completely into their ions in solution, weak acids dissociate only partially
Relationship between ionic products of water (Kw) and conditions
Increases as temp increases, because the concentration of H ions and OH ions increases. pH also increases because a higher temp means faster dissociation, more H ions are produced, and therefore it is more acidic.
