Acids And Bases Flashcards
Acid
An aqueous solution that conducts electricity, tastes sour, turns blue litmus paper red and neutralizes bases.
Base
An aqueous solution that conducts electricity and turns red litmus blue.
Neutral
Neither acidic or basic; with a pH of 7.
Indicator
A substance that changes colour depending on whether it is an acid or a base
pH
A measure of how acidic or basic a solution is
pH scale
A numerical scale ranging from 0 to 14 that is used to compare the acidity of solutions
Neutralization reaction
A chemical reaction in which an acid and a base react and form an ionic compound (a salt) and water. The resulting pH is closer to 7.
Acid leaching
The process of removing heavy metals from contaminated soils by adding an acid solution to the soil and catching the solution that drains through.
H+
Positively charged hydrogen ions.
OH-
Negatively charged hydroxide ions
“Salt”
Is an ionic compound that is produced through a neutral at infinity reaction buffering Capacity.
Buffering capacity “Buffer”
The ability of a substance to resist charges in pH
Wet deposition
Occurs when the acid forming pollutants create an acid before leaching the ground.
Dry decomposition
The process in which acid-forming Pollutants fall directly to earth in the dry state
