Acids And Bases Flashcards
Define Acid
Acids are an ionic compound, when dropped in water, acids will release H+
Define base
A base is an ionic compound, when dropped in water bases will release OH-
Describe the difference between a strong and a weak acid
A string acid releases lots of H+ ions into solution. Dissociates fully, a weak acid releases fewer H+ ions into solution. Partly dissociates.
Describe and explain the pH scale
The pH scale tells us how acidic or basic something is.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using litmus and universal indicator?
Litmus is a simple test which just indicates if something is acidic or basic. Universal indicator gives information about how acidic or basic something is with a spectrum of colors.
What is neutralization?
The chemical reaction between an acid and a base is called neutralization.
What is the symbol for hydrochloric
HCl
What is the symbol for nitric acid
HNO3
What is the symbol for sulfuric acid
H2SO4
When an acid reacts with a base, what compounds are formed?
Salt + Water
What is HCL called when it is in a salt?
Chloride (Cl-)
What is acidification?
An excess of carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere and goes into the clouds, and makes acid rain.
What color does universal indicator turn in a substance with a pH of 1-2?
Red
What color does universal indicator turn in a substance with a pH of 13-14?
Purple
How do you name a salt?
First word from the metal, second word taken from the acid
