Acids and bases Flashcards
What is acid
An acid is a substance that turns blue litmus paper red
What are the properties of acids
1) corrosive (causes burns). Eat away substances such a skin
2) acids in food taste sour (lemons and vinegar)
3) there pH is less than 7
Everyday acidic foods/drinks
Carbonic acid (coke), citric acid (lemons), ethanoic acid (vinegar)
What is a base
A substance that turns red litmus paper blue
Property of bases
1) corrosive (causes burns) eat away as substances such as skin ,metals ,stones
2) they feel soapy
3) their pHis greater than 7
Everyday bases
Toothpaste (sodium hydrogen carbonate)
Soap
Drain cleaner (sodium hydroxide)
How to tell the difference between acid and bases
An indicator (litmus paper)
What is a pH scale
Acids : pH less than 7
Bases : pH greater the 7
Neutral : pH 7
How much acid do we need to neutralise a base
We do an experiment called TITRATION
What colour does liquid turn in and titration experiment
The liquid in the conical flask turns pink to colourless
What is acid rain
Rain has pH of less the 5.5
How is acid rain formed
1) humans burn fossil fuels
2)gases like nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide (SO2)
