Acid definition
An acid is a substance that dissociates in water to form H+ ions
Chemical properties of Acids
Acid + metal → salt + hydrogen (test w lighted splint)
Acid + carbonate → salt + water + carbon dioxide (test w limewater)
Acid + bases(metal oxides +metal hydroxides) → salt + water
Strength/concentration of Acids
Determined by the degree of isonisation in water
Strong acids → fully ionises in water
Weak acids → partially ionises in water
eg HCl→ H+ Cl- → strong acid
CH3COOH ⇌ CH3COO- + H+ → weak acid
Concentration→ as amt of water ↑, concentration↓
Uses of Sulfuric acid
Used in the manufacture of detergents and fertilisers
Used in car batteries as an electrolyte
Basicity of Acids
Monobasic → Produced 1 H+ ion
Dibasic → produces 2 H+ ions
Tribasic → produces 3 H+ ions
