Acids and bases Flashcards
What is a Bronsted Lowry acid?
A proton donor.
What is a Bronsted Lowry base?
A proton acceptor.
What does Kw equal at 298K and what does Kw mean?
1.0x10^-14 and OH- = H+
What is a strong acid?
An acid that fully dissociates in water.
Define the term equivalence point:
The point at which the exact volume of the base has been added to neutralise the acid, or vice versa.
What are 3 properties of a good indicator?
- Sharp colour change
- End point must be at the equivalence point
- Distinct colour change.
What colour is methyl orange in acid? In alkali? At what ranges?
Red in acid; yellow in alkali. Around 4.4.
What is half neutralisation point?
When volume = half the volume that has been added at neutralisation point.
Define buffer solution:
A solution which resists changes in pH when a small amount of acid/alkali is added.
What is formed and lost when an acid is added to an acidic buffer?
A- decreases. HA increases.
What is formed and lost when an alkali is added to an acidic buffer?
A- increases. HA decreases.
