Acids and Alkalis Keywords Flashcards
Acid
A pH lower than 7
Corrosive
A substance which reacts with materials to make them dissolve
Irritant
Something that reddens/irritates the skin
Hydrogen
The atom present in all acids
Hydroxide
The atom present in all alkalis
Alkali
A soluble base that has a pH higher than 7. Effect: soapy, soluble
Indicator
A dye that can change colour when place in environments with different pH values
Litmus
An indicator which tells us something is an acid or alkali
Neutral
When a substance is neither acidic or alkaline - pH 7.
Strong acid (particles)
Lots of hydrogen ions
Alkali (particles)
Lots of hydroxide ions
Weak acid
Few hydrogen particles
Universal indicator
A mixture of dyes which creates a range of colour depending on the strength of acidity or alkalinity being tested.
pH number
The scale from 1-14 which shows acidity or alkalinity.
Neutralisation
When an acid and alkali/base react to form salt and water and resulting a pH of 7.
Titration
A laboratory method allowing accurate volumes of liquids to be measured.
Water
A molecule of water containing 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.
Salt
A substance formed when an acid reacts with a base.
Equation
A way of summarising a chemical reaction with the reactants on the left of the arrow and the products on the right.
Base
Something that neutralises an acid. Most of them are insoluble.
Chemical reaction
a process in which one or more substances are changed into others by their atoms being rearranged
Salt
The substance formed when and acid reacts with base
Reactivity
How reactive a substance is
Carbonate
A type of compound containing carbon and oxygen
