acids and alkalis - chemistry Flashcards
What is a chemical reaction?
A change in which atoms are rearranged to make new substances
What is a reversible reaction?
One where products can react to get back the new substances which you started with, most chemical reactions are not reversible
What are the risks of acids and alkalis?
Corrosive and irratant
How can we test weather a substance is an acid or alkali
By using an indicator by showing the colour on the ph scale
What is it if the Ph scale is 1-6
Acidic
What does it mean if the Ph scale 8-14
Alkaline
What does it mean if the Ph scale is 7?
Neutral
What is the concentration of an acid?
The amount of acid which has dissolved in 1 litre of water, the more concentrated the acid the lower the Ph.
How do you know the strength of an acid?
Depends on how much of the acid has broken apart when it has dissolved in water
How do you know if something is a strong acid?
It will be red and the all the partials would’ve spilt up
How do you know if something is a weak acid?
Will have particles that do not split up and will be orangey-yellow
