Acids and Alkalis Flashcards
What ions do acid form in water?
H+
What does a alkali base form in dissolved water?
OH-
What is the equation for neutralisation?
Acid + base –> salt + water
What is the symbol equation for neutralisation?
H+ + OH- –> H2O
What is the state symbol for solids?
For liquids?
For gases?
For dissolved in water?
(s)
(l)
(g)
(aq)
What does a metal + acid make?
Salt + hydrogen
In this reaction metals that are more reactive will make a louder noise
Hydrochloric acid will produce…?
Chloride salts
Sulfuric acid will produce…?
Sulfate salts
Acid + metal oxide –> ?
Salt + water
Acid + metal hydroxide –> ?
Salt + water
What is ammonium nitrate good for?
Fertiliser because it has nitrogen from two sources - the ammonia and nitric acid therefore making it a double dose and plants need nitrogen to make proteins
How can you make soluble salts?
Using a metal or an insoluble base
How else could you make soluble salts?
Use an alkali
How could you make insoluble salts?
Precipitation reaction - pick two solutions that contain the ions you need, then filter it, wash it, dry it on filter paper
What else can precipitation reactions be used for?
Remove poisonous ions from drinking water - calcium and magnesium
