acids and alkalis Flashcards
explain acids
acids are liquids that are acidic. they turn litmus red and have a PH of under 7.
they are often corrosive. this means they destroy living tissue.
what is the percentage of sulfuric acid produced in every continent?
worldwide, 180 million tonnes of sulfuric acid are produced.
(highest to lowest)
Asia~35%
North America~24%
Africa~11%
Western Europe~10%
Eastern Europe~10%
South and central America~7%
Oceana~3%
Describe Alkalis
Alkalis are the opposite of acids. they have a PH of 7-14. they turn litmus blue. They often feel soapy. they are NOT corrosive.
what is litmus indicator?
Litmus indicator shows whether a solution is acidic or alkaline.you can use it as a solution, or as a paper
What is universal indicator?
You can use universal indicator to find the pH of a solution. When you add it to a solution it changes to one of the colours on the pH scale. The colour shows the pH of the solution.
How does making hibiscus indicator at home and in a lab differ?
At home
1-add hibiscus flower to warm water in a cooking pot
2-Pour the mixture through a colander
3-Collect the solution in a glass
Ready
In a laboratory
1-add hibiscus flower in a beaker
2-Hear the solution over a Bunsen burner
3-Pour the mixture through filter paper
4-collect the mixture in a conical flask
Explain concentrated and dilute acids
When an acid is mixed with a lot of water, It is dilute.
When an acid is not mixed with any water, it is concentrated
Concentrated acids are very corrosive.
What is neutralisation?
If you add an alkaline solution to an acidic solution you will neutralise it.
