Acids And Alkalis Flashcards
What do all the acids have?
They all have hydrogen
What happens when you add a substance to at indicator
It changes colour when it is added to an acid or alkali solutions
How does litmus work
Litmus is a water soluble mixture of dyes extracted from lichens and is usually absorbed onto filter paper
What are called bases and they will have a PH of above 7
They are called
Metal oxides
Metal carbonates
Metal hydroxides
What is the product called from when you reaction with an acid it will always be
Salt
Hazards
Hazards are what can cause you harm and why?
Eg sulfuric acid is an irritant
Risk
Risks need to be replayed to what you are doing with them
Eg could spill the sulfuric onto hands
Control
What could you do to remedy the risk or prevent it from occurring
You can wash your hands with soapy water
Equation
Alkali + acid -> salt + water
Sodium hydroxide + hydrochloride acid -> sodium chloride + water
What should the farmer use to neutralise the soil
Alkali lime
You put vinegar on your arm from the sting nettles what is wrong? And what product would you suggest
Vinegar is acid and you can’t rub acid again acid because it makes it worse. You should use an alkali that is carbonate soda
You got stunk by a bee or a wasp and you rubbed soap on the sting what is the insect?
It’s a bee because it’s an acid and soap is an alkali
