Acids and Alkalis Flashcards
whats the general equation of an acid and base reaction
acid + base -> salt + water
whats the general equation of an acid and alkali reaction
acid + alkali -> salt + water
whats the general equation of an acid and metal reaction
acid + metal -> salt + hydrogen
whats the general equation of an acid and metal carbonate reaction
acid + metal carbonate -> salt + water + carbon dioxide
what is a base
solution that reacts with an acid to produce only salt and water
what is an alkali
a soluble base
what is a salt
an ionic substance with metal and non-metal ions
Describe how the tritation of an acid and an alkali can be used to make a soluble salt
- using a pipette transfer a known volume of alkali into a conical flask
- Add a few drops of indicator
- Add acid from a burette slowly until You are near to the indicator changing colour (end point)
- Repeat the experiment with no indictator
- Evaporate the water from the solution to leave the salt
What is an acid
acids produce hydrogen ions (H+) when it is dissolved in solution
What is neutralisation
Neutralisation is when the hydrogen ions (H+) of an acid reacts with and are cancelled out by hydroxide ions (OH-) from aj alkali or by other substances
ionic equation of neutralisation of an acid and alkali to make water
H+ + OH- -> H20
