Acids, Alkalis and Salts Flashcards
What is an acid?
A substance with a pH lower than 7.
What is a base?
A substance with a pH greater than 7.
What is an alkali?
A base that dissolves in water.
What ions make solutions acidic?
H+ ions.
What ions make solutions alkaline?
OH- ions.
What is the reaction between acids and bases?
Acid + Base –> Salt + Water
What type of reaction is the reaction between acids and bases?
Neutralisation.
What is the ionic equation for neutralisation?
H+ + OH- –> H2O
What is the reaction of acids with metals?
Acid + Metal –> Salt + Hydrogen
Why doesn’t copper react with dilute acids?
Less reactive than hydrogen.
What kind of salts does hydrochloric acid produce?
Chloride salts.
What kind of salts does sulfuric acid produce?
Sulfate salts.
What are the reactions between acids and metal oxides/hydroxides?
Acid + Metal (hydr)oxide –> Salt + Water
What is different about the neutralisation of ammonia?
No water is produced.
Why is ammonium nitrate a good fertiliser?
It has nitrogen from two sources.
