Acids, alkalis and bases Flashcards
What are acids?
Release H+ ions in aqueous solutions so they are defined as a proton donor
What are alkalis?
Release OH- in aqueous solutions
What are classified as bases?
Metal oxides
Alkalis
Metal carbonates
Are alkalis soluble or insoluble?
Soluble
Are bases soluble or insoluble?
Insoluble
What is the formula of hydrochloric acid?
HCl
What is the formula of nitric acid?
HNO3
What is the formula of ethanoic acid?
CH3COOH
What is a strong acid?
Proton donors that completely dissociate in aqueous solution
What are some example strong acids?
Hydrochloric acid (HCl)
Nitric acid (HNO3)
Sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
Phosphoric acid (H2PO3)
Give an example of a strong acid equation
HCl (aq) –> H+ (aq) + Cl- (aq)
What is a weak acid?
Proton donors that partially dissociate in aqueous solution
Give an example of a weak acid equation
CH3COOH (aq) ⇌ H+ (aq) + CH3COO- (aq)
What is a base?
Neutralise acids to form salts and are defined as a proton acceptor
